The Weavers of Senegal

AFRICA

Women's Weaving Cooperative | Senegal

They use age-old weaving techniques that are passed down from generation to generation, and learn the skill from their mothers and aunts from a young age. The baskets are woven using natural, sustainable fibres and strips of plastic recycled prayer mats. They work from home, usually weaving under mango trees in the late afternoon and evening.

Wolof women take pride in their craftsmanship and the ability to help provide for their families using this traditional skill. We are so honoured to be able to support their work and to help extend their market from local to global, giving them the opportunity for independence and empowerment.

This cooperative is helping individuals in one of the world's least developed countries provide for their families with healthy working conditions, and giving them a path to economic independence.
